Thread: First Razors - Thoughts?

Today I bought my first razor(s).

Then I discovered a few more on the shelf that I'd not noticed the first time, so I bought another. AUD$35 later, this is what I have:



They seem to be in an okay condition and, after reading http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...gers-sons.html I am glad I decided to get them both. From what I gather it seems the Joseph Rodgers and Sons is similar in age to the one in the above thread, at around 1870-1891 (corrections welcome =])

Looking forward to getting a strop so I can get started, but am going to have to read through the beginners guide a couple of times before I dare.

As for the razors... I've seen worse... but they look to be in rough shape, IMO. They might be able to be turned into shavers... can't really tell from the pictures...

Welcome! The first one looks like is going to be a shaver, the second one, maybe. The rust spot on the second that is on the middle of the razor goes almost to the edge. If rust goes deep and on to the edge, the edge will crumble and would not hold the edge on that spot.
Start with a metal polisher and see what you can remove. If not satisfied, read thru razor restoration in the wiki and go thru a progression of wet/dry sand paper. After you are happy with the results, I would send it out to a pro for honing.
You could take another route and send them to one of the restorers in the classified. That's what I did first few vintage razors.

Bit more work to do on the blade i think but i kind of like the look with a little rust - it's not too close to the edge, so might just get to polishing and honing..
