Default Wheatley Brothers Wheat Sheaf Razor, Signed Lace & Co, Wigan

    Hello again everybody.

Just thought I'd post some pictures of the razor that introduced me to the world of straight razors.

The reason I bought the job lot that I did was to get this particular one, because it is signed "Lace & Co, Wigan" and I collect things from Wigan.

I gather that the products of the Wheatley Brothers are much sought after and I count myself lucky to have been able to buy this.

For those of you who like statistics: the length from tip to pivot centre is approx 115mm (4 1/2"), size appears to be 7/8 (22mm)

Scales are black horn, wedge appears to be steel and I think that the brass pins are original.

There are jimps on both top and bottom of the tang

I would describe the profile as between quarter and half hollow, but I find it a bit difficult to assess this accurately.

I did find this 1910 photograph of Lace & Co's shop on the Wiganworld website

Interestingly, they claim on their shop window to be "Est. 100 years" but they are not mentioned in any of the earlier trade directories.

Presumably, they were called something else or traded outside Wigan beforehand ?

Anyway, as usual, any information would be gratefully received.

    Kind regards to all,

    Andy

Yes, I know what you mean......although a watchmakers from the 1700's would be even better.....
