    Default Roberston manufacturers??

    Hello,

This is my first post here, I'm french, I live in Paris and I collect Straight Razor.
I recently bought a seven days set razors with three missing.
As you will see it's written "Roberston manufacturers"on razors. Have you ever heard of it?
Sorry my english is a little bit limited...

    Welcome to SRP Guillame,

Your English is fine. You razors are very nice. I have no information for you unfortunately. Perhaps one of the more knowledgeable gentlemen will come along and help.

    Bienvenue à Guillaume SRP,

Votre anglais est très bien. Vous rasoirs sont très gentils. Je n'ai aucune information pour vous, malheureusement. Peut-être un de ces messieurs plus avertis viendra et vous aider.

They look like very nice razors, Guillaume!

I haven't been able to track down any info on Roberston & Co in any of the directories, makers mark manuals or books on sheffield that I have, although I have found that there are a fair number of 'Roberstons' living in Yorkshire.

Most of the 'hits' seem to come from France and Spain, so presumably they were heavily exported. A number of those hits say that there is 'Sheffield'written on the tang, so I am assuming that it was a Sheffield company. The word 'manufacturers' is a bit odd in this context - it leads me to believe that they produced other things - flatware? tableware? steel? - or perhaps they were more like a firm of 'factors' that bought from others and assembled the parts rather than making them themselves? That might explain a lack of razor-related info about them, however that is not the case with other factors like Colquhoun & Cadman.

Below are a couple of pics I found on the web - both Roberston & Co. razors. Note that 'Sheffield' is not visible on the tang, so I am assuming it was found to somewhere else - on the back of the tang or the box - as these have both been described as coming from Sheffield:

    Name: roberston co sheffield 02.jpg

Does your razor have 'Sheffield' on the back of the tang or somewhere on the box? I ask because I'm not totally convinced of their origin - yet!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

    Regards,
    Neil

    Thanks Wullie!

    Hello Neil,

Unfortunatelly the box isn't the original one, the sailer had about 50 razors to show and they were all mixed up. Actually it's written Tiffany's, New-York of the box, near the locker.
I was very surprised not to see Sheffield or something else on the tang; at the beginning I thought I bought fake or imitation because I could'nt find any information on this brand.
On the spine is written day's name in french!!?
Thanks for your comment and pictures, this is very interesting!!
I hope my english doesn't look like a google translation!

I'm sure my French translation looked like a google translation.

Your English is excellent as far as this old Texas boy can see.

Wullie, I must admit I've never heard French spoken with a Texas accent!

Had an old buddy that went through WWII with an M-1 in hands and back pack strapped on his back. He walked and fought his way from Normandy to Berlin. He fell in love with France and went back after the war. He learned to speak French fluently and got a veterinary degree while he was there. He related that the French who heard Texans speak French sounded better than anyone else from anywhere else in the states.

    Go figure. LOL

Don't worry Wullie your translation was good !!

I don't know anyone from Texas so I can't compare my accent!

Otherwise Jimmy, I do shave with my straight razors, here is my favourites:

    MK32 Heljestrand

    le Dandy by Thiers Issard

I also have a Le grelot Hospital but no pics sorry.
Those three are excellent razors, but I have to improve my technic, the neck is a big problem for me.
Most of my SR are not ready to shave , I only have an old belgian stone to refresh old edge..
