    Default HELP!!!

Hey guy I am new to this and i haven't gotten a razor yet i was thinking about getting one of those razors with the disposable blades to get the hang of actually shaving then moving on to a real razor with honing and stropping. If anyone has any advise it would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to SRP Muzzy!
You will find plenty of great people here who will be more than helpful and willing to share their experience and knowledge with you. I have been wet shaving for a year and been on SRP for only a few short weeks or months. Anyway, be patient and in a few days you will have plenty of opinions on this subject to help you make you decision.
I chose to go the route you are contemplating for the same reason. You will no doubt save money with the $10.00 handle and $5.00 box of 200 blades. You will also learn the basic techniques of moving over your face with a long shaving instrument. I can almost guarentee you will learn how to cut yourself with the so-called "safety razor you are looking to buy. No, I don't know your skill or ability but I do know the safety razor; the replaceable blades have square corners which protrude below the two halves of the handle. Unless you are able to hold the edge 100% flat against your skin 100% of the time you will fillet your face. They won't be huge cuts but they will bleed.
In my humble opinion, if you are serious about becoming a wet shaver jump in with both feet and start out right. I HIGHLY recommend you purchase Lynn Abram's DVD "The World of Straight Razor Shaving." I wish I had found this web site before I began wet shaving, it would have saved me some money and heart ache. The DVD would have saved some of both for me if I had purchased it before I attempted to hone a razor for the first time.
Look around the site if you haven't already done so. You can find some good deals on razors right here unless you insist on starting with a brand new one. If you plan to start with new equipment I recommend following the links to either of the 2 sites that advertise here, I have purchased from both and have had great results. If you choose to look at other vendors please look for the list of brands to avoid. In the upper left corner click on the wiki link then find then look under "getting started for the beginners guide. There you will find some very useful information to help you with your initial purchases.
I have babbled on long enough, I hope I have not bored you too much. Once again, welcome aboard and good luck with your quest.

Hi, Muzzy, and welcome to SRP!
Don't panic. Take a deep breath. Exhale. Repeat as needed. Feel better now? We're all here to help one another. I suggest that you nix the idea of a shavette and dive right into a proper straight blade -- why waste time, $$$ and effort w/a shavette? Few of those techniques transfer appropriately to a straight razor. +1 to OldSoldier's recommendation of obtaining Lynn's dvd.
Forget about honing for now. Proper stropping technique is essential to maintaining a professionally honed blade, and proper face prep is essential to a good shave. These are skills you can master without even having access to a straight razor! To practice stropping, all you need is a butter knife and an old leather belt or folded newspaper, and there are plenty of good vids both in the wiki or on YouTube from which to learn. The same goes for face prep.
If you have any questions, please feel free to post them here on SRP -- you'll always get good answers!
