Thanked: 4Scales Question
My wife bought a Giesen and Forstoff Adoration #295 4/8 for me off of ebay. There was no way to tell at the time and I really don’t think that the seller was aware, but there were minute cracks in the scales. About two weeks after receiving the razor, I opened it to put it to a finish stone and the engraved side broke cleanly in two.
My question is: do I bide my time and find another set of Adoration scales or simply replace them? I haven’t been able to find an approximate age to help me make my decision. If it’s one of the older ones, then there is no question that I’ll wait and find a set that matches them. If not, I had considered making a new set of scales myself; or just buying a generic replacement set. This particular maker’s mark is the diamond containing the “G” and “F” with the stick figure man between them. I haven’t tried to do anything yet out of fear of doing more harm to it. What little information I have found seems to suggest that it may be from around 1900, but nothing seems to pin it down to a specific era. Anybody have any ideas or know who might be able to help or evn if it's worth the trouble?

Finding replacement scales to match the original set may take some time and maybe forever. If it were mine I would make replacement scales for it and if I ever found the original replace scales for it I would the set I made with the original set. No need to retire the razor until you find the originals. Good luck.

The scales seem to be relatively common. Joed, I actually had not considered replacing the scales but watching for the originals... DUH!... I adore the razor for a couple of reasons, but mostly because SWMBO bought it for me. Oh, there is also a crack starting just to the left in the opposite scale. I'd really like to get this one into use. I was thinking about buying replacement scales and maybe even the screw type pins, but can't remember what web site I saw them on.Last edited by Toymkr; 08-25-2012 at 12:33 PM.

Sorry to hear about this.
I like Joed's idea of making replacement scales to get it into the rotation.

Why don't you simply fix the crack from the inner part of the scale with CA glue, and glue the broken scale? It needs a good hand but you could do a clean job. Especially because the scales seems in good overall conditions, apart from the crack... and they are very attractive!

You could always make new scales for it and transfer the logo onto the new scales. A little acetone and the logo should come right off of the old scales, then super glue them to the new scales.

or, it may be your lucky day. i just happen to have one of those that i'm not using. the scales are a bit warped but otherwise seem to be in fine shape. a little work (or send the two off to a pro), and i'm sure you could get one good razor out of the lot. pm me if you want to work something out....
