Thanked: 2Hand me down from Gramps
I'm just getting into straight shaving, and my grandfather said he had something for me.
Can anyone tell me about this razor? I'm assuming it needs to be honed

Thanked: 31Thanks for the pics. And congrats on "hand-me-down" razor. If it were me, I'd hang on to that for the rest of my life then "hand-it-down" to my son. Quality wise I can only comment from what I've read on here, and that it's a good shaver.

Thanked: 31And yes you should send her out to get honed by one of the pro's here on SRP. Is this your fist razor? If so you might consider getting a cheapie to learn on. That way if something were to go wrong, you wouldn't be loosing an heirloom.

Nice piece. Priceless coming from Gramps. By all means get it honed and use it. Leave it to your kids and theirs thereafter. I've seen those same scales on a many Wester Bros razors. Droescher was a distributor and had razors made for them so it is possible Wester Bros made that ..... I'm betting it is a real good shaver.

Thanked: 57I concur with the recommendation to send it out to a pro for honing and also get a second cheapie razor to learn on.

Thanked: 2Re: Hand me down from Gramps
So what's the major advantage to learning with something cheap? Do I run the risk of damaging the one I have? Wouldn't a cheapy be more troublesome unless I get it honed too?

You certainly could (would) damage your hand me down razor if that was your first honing. I'm not saying grab something cheap, just something with not as much sentimental value. Learn to hone on that, wear it down to the nub if that's what it takes. Then, and only then, hone your Grandfather's razor and enjoy for the rest of your life. It might also be a good idea to buy a shave ready razor from someone here or another reputable vendor so you will have a good base to judge your own honing on. Good luck.
