    Default Deteriorating Silver blade finish

I recently received a "Red Point" razor that had been in storage for years, but when I examined the blade, there were no blemishes, scratches or other visible defects. I've used it many times, but this time when I pulled it out the blade was and still has a mirror finish except for one spot at the spine. When I went to use it, a nail head size piece of the silver was missing up by the spine exposing the dull finish metal undereath. I take care to keep my razors clean and dry when in storage and was wondering if anyone knew what might have caused this loss of the silver finish, if it is apt to get larger and if there is anything I can do to minimize further deterioration. what is the chance of this blemish reaching the shaving edge? Thanks for any info, Joe

As to the razor, I do not think any Red Points were plated. A spot of staining?
Try some polish. Post a pic!

A picture would tell us more.

Plating is uncommon as far as plating an entire blade. If that is the case there isn't much you can do about it. if it isn't plate and just corrosion you could polish it out.

Thanks so much for the response, I'll try some polish and try to post a picture if I can figure out how to do it! Joe

I have a red-point pre Utica, so it's an Anton Wingen Jr., and have no issues with plating or the finish! I actually get a great shave and found it at an antique store in almost mint condition for $30!!
