    Default Hart Razors ?

I have two Hart razors-one first generation pre jib square point and a second generation round point, both 6/8. The second generation appears to have a greater hollow to the blade and shave substantially better for me. Does anyone know if the grind varies from razor to razor or if there was a change from the first to second editions? Or dis some of the first editions need additional honing. I understand these are artisan products and as such there may be some variations but curious if anyone else has had a similar experience.

We're they both ground by the same AT? I have 2 first generation and 3 second Generation 6/8 and 7/8 they are almost all the same. But there are small differences but nothing major that I can see with the grind. Can you add some pictures ?

Different artisans Unfortunately I can't add them right now but will tonight. I can't figure why one shaves well and the other is a bit of a struggle.

Thance, I got to taste the Hart goodness last month for the first time. The owner had trouble touching up the edge. I don't know from your post so far, if it needs a touch up and is not responding to your efforts, or if the question is why it should need the touch up at all. The one I did - responded very nicely to the stones & I could immediately see why they have a following - nice razor, nice shaver.

The only thing I noted when I first saw it was that they're called 1/4 hollows, and this one was near wedge. Like any true wedge or near wedge, using tape needs some care to keep it even on both sides without stretching the tape - or you'll start a new bevel with each tape change. Keep it even, and you'll enjoy all the goodness.

I was told they were silent shavers. Any near wedge isn't going to sing opera (not even bass, much less the soprano notes), but this one did talk back in subdued tones. It was very similar in feedback to a Swedish near wedge I enjoy.

If this one needs a touch up - by all means get it back to where it delivers the joy. If you need a hand w/ that - pm me. Pick up return shipping and that's all.

Thanks Pinklather-the one I am having trouble with is fresh from the seller and the one that works very well was touched on a condi stone by a honemeister I have been told by the previous owner. I may need to follow that course. I had been told harts shipped shave ready. I will try the 'new' one once more before giving up and arranging a touch up-could be my technque

While all things wet shaving are somewhat subjective I have not received a new Hart Steel that did not require some touching up from a 12k Naniwa to one of my Japanese naturals for finishing. YMMV. I would also find it easy to believe
there would be a few inconsistencies in the grind with the earliest razors where more than one craftsman may have produced the razors. All of this notwithstanding all the razors became great shavers. I do not know if it is still the case with Hart Steel but they did use tape with their honing for some time.

There was a big to-do about Hart's very first razor. There was one fellow who complained that the geometry was wrong because the spine, he said, was too thin to properly hone the blade width. The correct angle couldn't be achieved. I didn't have one, don't know if that assertion was correct, or if yours might be that early a Hart. Something else to take a look at.
