ats34 or Damascus
Shaved tonight... A new tactic to avoid morning stress with my two daughters running (and claiming) around the bathroom: I take a bath in the evening with a good book (busy with schopenhauer at the moment...) and afterwords I shave (the badger was in a mug with some hot water all the time, so ready to foam up some lather... and the straight was stropped already... so right afther the bath: GO.
GREAT!
But still in the bath I was contemplating my eyes (and especially my vision). You see, I am wearing spectacles, and when shaving I see just enought to not cut myselve. But contemplating on the future...
So my first question:
- Are there any members who wear their glasses when shaving (or is everybody with a not 100% sight on contactlenses?). And how to tackle this handicap?
Still in the bathtub, I was contemplating further on buying a Maestro... I can wait till my wife agrees on a totally big amount of money spend on a razor... but thats probably not going to happen so a Damascus is not in the picture (unless... I attempt to earn more money than my wife does - big challenge- and buy it without a blink).
Anyway I explained to her that a man spends almost 10.000 dollar on shaving in his life using mach3... so that 800 for a nice Damascus is a bargain... but she thought 800 would be also nice for dresses/tops/bikini's aso... endless discussion...).
Contemplating further and knowing an ATS34 is reachable I would like to know:
second question:
-Is an ATS34 with eyes closed (so you don't see the beauty of the damascus blade) just as good as a Maestro Damascus????????????????????????
thanks,
michel

Can't comment on Damascus steel as it is also off limits to me. But I can comment on the glasses as I wear them too. I take them off for the first two strokes right at my sideburns then put them on for the rest of the shave. I can't see anything clearly unless it's less than ten centimeters from my face so I consider my glasses necessary , I even did so before I switched to a straight.

I consider my glasses to be eye protection when I'm shaving high up on my cheeks

Thanked: 7Personally, i would've presumed that ATS 34 would be a better steel than the damascus, but not as pretty.

the ATS is just as good, if not better... But no swirl pattern on it

Thanked: 7Of course i should've qualified my answer, that the performance of the damscus will depend on the constituent steels in the mix, the skill of the forger (preventing too much decarburisation in the forge) and the performance of both the Damascus and the Ats34 will depend on the heat treating.

Thanked: 4942And both are actually very good shavers. The Damascus to me, has a harder feel to it, still a very comfy shave.

yep I wear glasses when shaving, the only trouble is on the s-n pass ,dont ding the edge on you glasses frame. I did try to shave once without wearing them,I have a one inch scare on my cheek where I shoved a w&b meat chopper through it
Kind regards Peter

Yep I wear glasses when shaving, being near sighted they are an absolute necissity for the neck area.

Thanked: 346Another glasses shaver here. My only problem is I have to shave up to my eyelids, so I have to slide the razor underneath my glasses to shave that area; I'd take my glasses off but I really don't want to be waving a blade around that close to my eyes without seeing what I'm doing.
