Scales and autoclaves
I recently "accidentally" won a lot on eBay, and while getting a haircut my barber mentioned using an autoclave for sterilizing the new acquisitions. Is this safe to do? The scales seem to be various woods and plastics.

Not safe for the scales and not necessary for the metal or the scales. Autoclave sterilization requires steam temp or at least 265 and I forget the pressure but it is up there. Anyway, there have been many threads batting this around and if you do a search for sterilize, autoclave or something like that you'll find plenty info.

Gotcha, I may still use it for the ones that need a re-scale, would a quick baribicide bath be okay for the scaled ones? I saw that you're not a big fan of it, but it's one of those things that makes me sleep better at night if it's safe for use on scales.
Cheers.

The only thing I would worry about with barbicide is the possibility that it might discolor scales. I don't know if it would but it is a blue solution IIRC and probably has dye in it.

Thanked: 2027Hot soapy water and a toothbrush, thats all you need to do,use an anti-bacterial soap if your real anal about.
All bacteria is a living thing, meaning after awhile it all dies, even the bad ones cannot live for long on dry razors, some a matter of minutes, some as long as maybe a week.
Scrub them up.hone them, use them, you should have no worrys.

You could try marvecide on the blade only, classic edge has it in a spray now. Barbicide if not diluted right will turn your scales blue, and wil eat the wood. Guy a few months ago dyed his new dbl duck blue that way. The autoclave will melt plastic and warp wood, only heat resistant resins, glass, and hard metals should be autoclaved. Marvicide and direct exposure to uv light no more than 8" from the light source will kill anything.
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.
