Thanked: 8Max Sprecher Custom details
Hi, I've been thinking of getting a Max Sprecher custom for over a year now. I haven't found much information online about them, so if you own one, this is what I am interested to know:
1. O1 Steel and honing: How hard is this steel and how easy are they to hone/maintain.
2. Shaving Feel: How does it feel? I really like razor that feel like "thin edge" such as Gotta, Filarmonicas and Dubl Ducks.

Thanked: 1263Sorry, cant help you now but if you can wait a few months I'll let you know
There's a few floating around here so I'm sure a few of the guys will be along to chime in soon. I do have a custom by another maker in O1 though and its just as easy to hone and holds an edge like any of my other blades.

Thanked: 2591I suggest you ask Max about those details, after all he is the maker of the blades he should know best.
Typical razor hardness is 60-61 HRC, and if I am not wrong O1 sweet spot is somewhere there. HRC 61 is not hard to hone at all. O1 is very fine grained steel so I expect it to take a really fine edge.Stefan

Yeah, as said above, send Max a mail or a PM.
I have a couple of his fine pieces, and they are second to none really.
They shine both when it comes to fit and finish, workmanship and edge-capabilities.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Max Sprecher Custom details
1+++
Just contact Max. He's a great guy and will work with you. He'll make such you get exactly what you want. I have one of his customs with another on order. I also have about 14 of his vintage restores. Be careful though, once you have one of his razors, your standards will raise and you'll only be happy with the very best. Here is a pic of my 8th W&B Maxterpiece that is currently in route to my home.

Thanked: 1936Like these guys said, talk to Max and/or some owners of his blades. In regards to the steel, I can answer that one. Mike Blue does most of my HT work and he's on top of his game and can bring the best out in any steel. The blades he's treated for me can handle a Shapton GS 30. VERY FEW razors can handle that fine of an edge and hold up, O1 with the proper HT can and does exceptionally well. Your second question really can't be answered because it's so open ended, the way a razor feels has a lot of factors like the grind, the stones you use, and of course your shaving technique. Honing and maintaining any good carbon steel razor is about the same. Most all custom razors will come to you honed, so you won't have to worry about that initial bevel set on a new custom razor. This is a good thing, few know what I am talking about.

@Maximilian is a real man, with a real face, who has been putting steel to that fine face of his for over 25 years. I have never met a truer soul, or a more honest businessman. Max's word is good as gold.

Can't really address your questions, but working with Max on a custom was great. Can't go wrong.

Thanked: 116Max was really mean to me when I contacted him, he tried to drain my bank account of all available funds. Realistically I just can't afford his stuff right now but wish I could soooo badly!
