Thanked: 0Christmas for my son
My husband purchased a straight razor 40 years ago as an antique. It is a Wade and Butcher's Celebrated Razor. The blade says manufactured by Wade & Butcher Sheffield. My son told us he would like one for Christmas. We want to give him my husband's, but would like to know something about it as we give it to him. Can anyone tell me anything, such as date, etc., of this razor? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Christmas for my son
If your son wants a straight razor to use some pictures of the blade it self will help use let you know if the razor is still useable.
Wade and butcher is a good name in straight razors and produced excellent shavers.

That is a very nice razor from a very famous company. For various reasons I would bet it was made between 1850 and 1880s. W&B probably made a couple of million of them in their time of production. I shave with a few different W&B models quite happily.
If your son wants to put that razor back into service show him our website and our 'beginner's guide' here.

Thanked: 116I'd look into contacting some of the old guys here that do high quality restorations and bring this beauty back to it's original working condition!

Thanked: 116You can tell by the stamping on the tang. To me it's pre 1885, if i'm remembering correctly, i'm no Sheffield expert but pretty sure anything after 1885 states 'Sheffield, England'. The lack of England on the tang contributes to supporting the age of the razor. If you use the google custom search at the top right you'll find some info on it.
