Default My first whipped dog purchase

I bought a sight unseen and unhoned razor from whipped dog to begin learning how to hone. Just arrived, gota say it was fun to be surprised when I opened up the package. It is a Genco, just a hair over 5/8" in width and 2.5" in length. It has a notch in the tang right behind the shoulder, which I find interesting. If anyone can tell me a little bit about this particular razor, it has nothing at all on the blade except "Genco" which makes it hard for me to look up information on it. I did search on here for a bit and found out a little about Genco. Pics soon to follow once I upload them.

Could be somthing like Genco Safedge Model B or this one

Edit: definently the second. A slight frown but otherwise a decent razor.

Good luck on the learning curves.

I'm no expert on Gencos, but that notch doesn't look natural to me. It looks to have reasonably even hone wear and would most likely clean up quite well with a bit more work (if you cared - personally I have quite a few razors with that amount of patina and I am not bothered by it at all)

Congratulations, I am sure that will be a good steady shaver for you. Just be careful with that spike point.

That notch is there because the blade originally came with a detachable guard.

If I had bought that I'd wanna know where my detachable guard is ? Genco was a NY made razor and a good outfit. IIRC they became Geneva and were eventually bought out by Case. I may be (shudder) wrong about that though.

Geneva Cutlery co trademark genco then still genco but from Case after 1935, this razor with the guard or lack off is from Geneva cutlery.
you can see it with the guard on this advertisement.
