Default my first straight, Thiers-Issard 5/8

This is my venture to the straight side of shaving. I've had an Edwin Jagger DE for a couple months and loved it, but I only did it because it was half the cost of a straight razor starter set. Thanks to Christmas, and my lovely mother, I can now join the likes of you. The kit also came with a strop and some Art of Shaving unscented soap from the Art of Shaving store on the Plaza in KCMO. Hence the massive logo on the blade. But enough words, onto the carbon steel porn.

Welcome to a whole different world!

I would presume that your razor was sold as 'Shave Ready'. Please let us know how it shaves!!!

While all of my razors purchased from SRP's Classifieds advertized as shave ready were truly 'Shave Ready' my Revisor that I purchased brand new from the factory would give a decent shave but after honing here at home it shaved Excellent!!!

The salesman at the store told my mom that it was. I've shaved with it twice already but it doesn't seem as sharp as it should be, my DE was getting much closer. It will clip off hairs on my arm, but it grabs them before it cuts them. I have no other ways to tell and no experience with straights to tell the difference really.

Hence my RAD. I rolled the edge on my first razor from SRD before I ever found out what "shave-ready" was! So I started honing and buying other ebay razors, and finally lucked into a C-MON that shaves like a dream. Gives me something to compare to, finally. The honing, the shaving technique and the shaves are all progressing at a consistent parallel rate now, I would say. Overall, I'm very pleased and very committed, if not addicted!

If the razor was bought from AOS it's not shave ready. It will need to be honed. Send it out.

I'll tell you what, I'll hone it for free! All it will cost you is shipping to me! Send me a PM so I can give you my address!! If I'm not satisfied with my edge, I'll send it to a good friend who has more honing experience than me! Shipping back will be on me! Merry Belated Christmas!

That's quite tempting my good sir.

I called customer service for AOS to tell them about the situation and how their claim of "shave ready" was not true and asked if they would be willing to reimburse me the cost of having someone else fulfill their promise. They told me "Well each razor is hand sharpened so the edge varies from razor to razor and it may not be up to your personal standards of sharpness. And you'll have to hone it a few times a year anyway so we won't be able to reimburse you for that." I told them it shaved like a butter knife and all they did was keep repeating themselves, even after I asked if they had a quality assurance division. So it seems my mother bought a $300+ razor that still needs an edge put on it.

I will not be doing business with AOS again...or ever I guess since my mother purchased the razor.

My offer still stands!!! If you'd like references to other members who have sampled my edges, just PM me and I'll give them to you!

Getting a straight razor that isn't shave ready straight from the factory is common. If you get a razor from Straight Razor Designs, now those are shave ready. I have honed AOS TI's before with my Naniwa Super Stones. They do take fantastic edges once they are honed right.
