Volunteer Cutlery
My mom came in for the holidays and gave me a couple straights that she picked up at an antique store. However, once I started to remove the surface rust from the tang on one, it revealed the name of a company that I'm unfamiliar with. It's marked simply "Volunteer Cutlery Sheffield". We spent the better part of the weekend looking for any information but I've come up almost empty. As best I can tell, the blade appears to be an 11/16" Spanish point and the scales appear to be horn. Following the details on a wiki, the shape if the tail makes me think it's from somewhere between 1830 to 1845. But, that's all I have to go on. Any further insights would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanked: 4249The name does come up often "Volunteer Cutlery" but really no information on the company, nevertheless a beautiful shoulderless Sheffield razor, in pretty good condition. Enjoy!

Thanks! The blade has cleaned up beautifully (almost like new). Now I just need to get a good edge on it and I'll be set.

Thanks, Martin. It looks like they've been around a while. If my guess is correct, it's possible that this thong could be as old as 170 years. Then again, what the heck do I know?

Thanked: 4249Your very welcome. Without going into a lot of details it is for sure a 125+ years old razor for sure. Soulderless razors are a pleasure to use and easy to hone!
