Thread: Question about size of razors on Ebay

I won 3 vintage razors from 3 different vendors on ebay and all of them were sold as 11/16 wide.
However, when I received them I compared them to my 5/8 Dovo Best Quality and they are narrower than the Dovo.
Since I'm new to this, I'm not sure if this is common practice and normal to describe them as being 11/16 (I imagine that was the size when they were new) and not what they are today?
All sellers have 100% positive feedback.
Other than the size, all razors are just like described, and I'm pretty happy with them. I got a Boker King Cutter, Dubl Duck Goldedge and a Wade & Butcher Medium Size Hollow Ground.

That's got to be frustrating! Whether or not you like larger blades, a buyer should expect a description to be accurate.

Razors should be describes as they are at the time of sale. And so if they were sold as 11/16 and they are less than 5/8 I believe you have every right to feel slighted.

Out of curiosity, have you measured your 5/8 Dovo? Could be it's just bigger than you expect too. Seems odd that three blades from three separate vendors would have the same issue...

To be sure, I'd say just measure the things.

If you are unhappy with what you received I would talk to the sellers. Since they have good feedback they might want to fix things. It could have just been a typo too. Most razors I have gotten were either what was posted or bigger. Some sellers will round down not round up.

That has been my experience as well, which is why I thought it so odd that three separate vendors would make the same mistake.

Measure them. I have a brand new Thiers Issard that was sold to me as a 5/8, but it measures a full 6/8.

Another thing: some measure from the top of the spine to the cutting edge. I have had razors quoted as a size and measuring that way made them accurate and some not, but measuring (like some) from the edge of the spine to the cutting edge has made some razors size descriptions accurate, and some not. I would ask how they measured the size next time before buying. Measure both ways, if one way is correct, and one not, then the buyer may have neglected to mention the way he measured, and may actually be correct to "him".

You were right! I just measured it. My new 5/8 Dovo is actually very close to 6/8!
I didn't expect that. When I put them side by side and I noticed the difference, I never imagined the new one could be actually bigger than it says on the box.

It never hurts to ask the seller a question. Unless he see's it as a selling point. Then your telling every bidder too. personally I would rather know for sure if it was part of the reason I was buying it. Say for example I have 2 Goldenedges and one is 5/8 and the other 7/8. If I am buying another because I want a 6/8 I make sure it is.

The difference is that most manufacturers rate the blade size without the spine. As there is no defined measuring point, the majority of ebay sellers for consistency measure from the back of the spine to the cutting edge. Most new Dovo 5/8 will measure a tad over 11/16 if you measure from the spine to the cutting edge. I measure the razors I sell on ebay with a set of digital calipers from the back of the spine to the cutting edge.

I've also had a lot of examples of 5/8 hollow grounds that were closer to 6/8.
