Thread: does this look legit? how do I discern quality from crap?

I'd like to pick this up (it's about a mile from my house, conveniently) but how do I know if it's legitimate or if it's garbage?

advertised "shave ready", 6/8, cromov steel, features "reground stabilizer" to help "lay flat on a stone"

It is a $1 Chinese razor it will shave if the kinks have been worked out, that is the "Reground Stabilizer" story..

There is a ton of controversy surrounding these and the Gold Dollar razors, and a huge thread to explain most of it..

Save the $35 and get something 1/2 way decent, these aren't worth that much at all..

For $35 you can buy a much better razor than that.
You might have to wait on the mailman but it will be well worth it.

Is this the DA I've read about? There seem to be multiple razors called DA. I thought the better ones were white-handled... I know this thing says DA on it, but I don't know what they usually look like. At any rate, my understanding was that they are decent starter straights.

Is it not possible to get a good shave from something like this? If it's not worth $35, what if I could talk him down to $20 or whatever? Or if I could get him to throw in some soap/strop/etc? I'll strop for as long as it takes, if it means I can save a few bucks!

Confucius say, the thrill and excitement of the bargain is quickly eclipsed by the non performance and poor quality and ensuing disappointment and aggravation of the purchase to begin with.

there are sight unseen deals that cost the same for a better razor than that. but in the end it is your face, your money and your decision.

i'm in the don't get one category, i tried 4 of these years ago when you could get them cheap i got a shavable edge on one, one would hold an edge for about 5 shaves and the other 2 i could not get to work regardless of the hones i tried. you might have a much better experience.

If you really want to save money and just really don't care about anything else. You can get a not shave ready GD off Ebay for 5 dollars with free shipping. I don't know what having a razor honed costs though.

Botttom line is that there are better deals to be had.

I think I would listen to what the others have said and walk away. It is highly unlikely that you will be able to get a good shave from that razor is the general consensus. It is a false economy to get something like that but in the end it is your call, you may get lucky or not.
