Thread: Any infor about this manufacturer?

hi, I've just received this razor my girlfriend bought for me from ebay but I have never heard of this manufacturer just wondering have any of you hear of it before, the name of the manufacturer is " RUTLEY BOROLGM" razor itself is nearly a wedge 7/8 maybe 8/8, horn scales with led spacer, by that I assume it is quite old probably before 1900's. The makers of your razor were originally called Putley & Son (Abraham Putley and his Son Isaac). The company was based at 114 King Street in the Borough area of London, as found in the 1838 - 1840 London Directory. However the partnership was dissolved in 1840:



Abraham was born in 1769 and died in Frederick Place, Borough Road, Southwark in 1843. Sometime after this the name of the company became just Putley.

In 1846-50 they were at 114 Borough High Street, in 1856 44 and 114 Borough High Street, later moving to 66 and later still 127.

In 1851 the family (Isaac and wife Anne, sons Edwin, Isaac, Alfred and Charles) lived at 34 Hight Street, Southwark. The father was listed as a cutler, and son Isaac (15yrs) was a solicitors clerk.

In 1861 they had moved to 44 High Street as the family residence, and Charles, Isaac and Alfred were listed as cutlers. Father Isaac died aged 64 in June 1862.

Son Isaac died young in 1867, about 32 yrs old.

In 1871 the family was at 175 High Street and Ann, head of the household was listed as a cutler, as was Alfred. Edwin was a solicitors clerk and Charles was a grocers clerk.

In 1881 brothers Edwin and Alfred shared the same residence at No. 41 Pembridge Road and both were listed as cutlers and opticians.

By 1901 Edwin was 60 yrs old, still living with Alfred (58 yrs old) and listed as a working cutler once again.
