Thanked: 12History Gurus please to be helping...
I have recently acquired a razor that I have been working on restoring, I have searched for information regarding the Maker of said razor and have been unable to locate any history on them. Any help you amazing historians might be able to provide would be amazing!!
The Makers mark says:
Young
Cutler to the Queen
EDINR
There doesn't appear to be any Symbols along with the words.
I believe it is a maker located in Edinburgh Scotland sometime in the mid-late 1800's
Thanks again for the help!!

A photo of the overall razor and a close up of the tang stamp would help our resident historians and offer eye candy for the rest of us.

The rusty ones are from before the sanding... unfortunately I don't have a pic of the mark after the clean up. I'll try to get one tonight. Thanks again for any help!

Thanked: 3164Hi Dave,
Your razor was made by Archibald Young. As well as being cutler to the queen, he also made surgical instruments.
He was born c1842. married wife Agnes and had a son called George. He lived in Princes Street, Edinburgh, moving to 58 North Bridge in 1861 and 57-61 Forest Road in 1880. In 1898 he also had a premises at 7 Hope Road and by then the firm was styled Archibald Young & Son. I presume Archibalds father was also a cutler, as the the Hope Street premises advertised that the company was founded in 1805.
Regards,
Neil

Thanked: 12WOW!!! You are AMAZING!! thank you VERY much!! Do you have some sort of encyclopedia of EVERY razor maker and their entire life stories just laying around the house?!?!? I have been reading some of your genealogical information and historical postings the last couple of days and find it fascinating that you are able to locate this information! So it appears my time frame is just about right likely sometime in the late 1800's! this makes me a very happy man. thank you SO very much for this Neil!!

Thanked: 4249The first Archibald Young set up as a cutler at the head of Leith Wynd in 1804. In 1819 his son shrewdly opened premises beside the medical school. He achieved the title of 'cutler to his Majesty' in 1832, im wondering if this was his father?
