Thanked: 0Butler Straight Razor
My daughter works with a home cleaning service and came upon a Butler Straight razor and hone.
The hone does not look like it had ever been opened. The lettering on the hone box are faded, but you can make out the word Pike razor hone on the cover and it is embossed into the stone.
The razor is very clean, you can read the motto Keen as this razors edge invisible and see Shakespeare's face.
There is a small rust spot on the back of the blade and minor bluing on the hollow.
The #2 is on the base of the blade.
What do I have here and how would the more experienced members suggest I proceed.
I have been using a shavette for over a month and have read that the experience is not comparable to an actual razor.
Thanks all in advance

pike brand razor hones are the fore-runners of the modern Norton hones. i have one and it works nicel. the butler razor is actually quite a nice little shaver. the bluing though could be a matter of concern, sometimes it is join oil residue other times it is a sign of the blade having been overheated and ruined
your best bet is to clean and polish the razor and then send it out to be honed. the barber's hone will keep your razor sharp but takes patience to make a razor sharp.
pictures of both would be great and would help to guage condition. value is subjective and as such varies too much for consideration.
enjoy,
jimBe just and fear not.

I had a George Butler pass through my hands once. Took a real nice edge. Can't go wrong with Sheffield razors.

Thanked: 0seeing this thread makes me sad :S
got a butler straight razor that belonged to my grandfather, evidently he had no idea how to sharpen it properly and took it to a grindstone without any sharpening knowledge.
needless to say it is now more of a knife than a razor... looking into getting it restored professionally if at all possible, wish me luck lol
