Naaah can't be that
Hey all,
I picked this up on ebay (item no: 140068347170) after reading some good reviews about crown and sword ERN'n in other posts. There are lots of photos but none are really that good of the blade so I put in a single low bid and got it.
The markings on the blade say 1720 but it can't be that old surely. Last time I asked a question of the age of a razor I got pointed in the direction of this page, but can't see it there.
Any ideas of what that number might mean??
Cheers,
David.

My guess is that it's a model number, I have no idea if the numbers relate to blade dimensions in any way.
I have several of the C&S 1166 models and they're all very good shavers. Even among those I can feel a difference in weight though. The older ones appear to have the same grind on the blade but are a little heavier overall, and I think the difference is all in the tang.

i just wanted to make sure you realize that the handle is broken up at the pivot pin. and in fact, the handle is missing the entier top of one side of hte pivot pin. by the looks of that first picture where he's holding it, it seems like the blade will actually fall off from the handle if tilted to the other side. he must be holding the scales together in the piture.
this isn't a reflection on the blade itself, im just noting that if its really missing the entire top of the handle by the pivot pin that you will not be able to use this razor till its fixed or replaced.
besides that, i own a CROWN razor, its the same company as Crown and Sword but guess they changed the name later on. its my best shaving razor. takes an amazing edge and feels velvety smooth.

Yeah that's a model number and a very respected one for them if I'm not mistaken.

Thanked: 0I think that Crown and Sword is from:
C. FRIEDR. ERN & CO.
Solingen, Germany
ca. 1873-present
I looked at that one and passed because it was broken at the pin.

Thanks for the replies,
Steven, hmmm yeah 1166 is getting beyond an age that could be plausible.
jscott, I'm not too concerned with the scales. I'd be taking them off to clean it up anyway and I'll whack on a new set. It would be nice to keep the originals but in this case I don't think thats an option. Fingers crossed I can get mine to the same level as your model.
xman, I saw quite a few posts from members with this model and they all seems pretty happy with them. Hopefully the blade isn't too damaged.... and if it is I'm only out 10 bucks.

Got the razor in the post last night. It looks like it hadn't been used and smelt like it had been kept in an ashtray for the past 100 years.
I was originally going to post to ask if it was a different kind of steel because of the color but then I started to clean it and after about an hour I could see some metal color.
After a few more hours work I reviled some serious pitting so I decided to hone it up and see if it was at least a good shaver and after only a few minutes on the hone it came up a treat and shaved beautifully. It certainly won't be a looker but after I replace the scales and clean it up a bit more it could be a regular!
