Thread: Carver Razor Works Pittsburgh No.B.700.

Hi Got an email asking for information about Carver Razor Works Pittsburgh No.B.700. razor.
Absolutely Nothing on the net however I have searched!

If any one can help I & the owner would be very grateful

Actually, it's "Garver Razor Works". Which really makes me scratch my head considering that my step family are Garvers and I'm from the Pittsburgh area originally. I wonder if there's some sort of family connection...

I thought that looked like a G, I did look for Garver too and came up empty handed

My best guess is that it must have been a local small business that operated during Pittsburgh's steel days. Considering that Andrew Carnegie didn't become a major player until the late 1880's, I'd say that this razor was likely produced somewhere in the early to mid 20th century.

Exactly. There have been so many manufacturers of straight razors throughout history that getting detailed info on some of the smaller companies can be extremely difficult. Perhaps one of our more industrious/persistent members will have more luck than a Google search can provide.

Neil, Martin or manah might shed some light if anyone can. Whoever made it looks like a quality piece. Smooth shaving with it.

Yea, that was my first thought too, that it looks like a quality piece. The name doesn't really matter the shave does. Hope you can find some background on it.

Hi Portal5, very nice razor, from the picture it looks to me like its a covered tang razor, i did find another "Garver razor works" razor with a different number and hammered tang. I totally agree with PhantomJM on dating this razor early 20th century.
Unfortunately i was unable to find direct information on Garvers but more then likely a short lived distributor of razor from others makers. Nevertheless that doesnt mean its a bad razor it really looks like a quality piece to me for sure.
Here the pic of the other Garvers razor.

Going by the shape of the blade, the scales, the covered tang, the tail, it is possible that this razor was made by Robeson thaey were quite famous for their hammered tang razor.

Also the company, definately made razors for others, and like yours they offered a covered tang razor as well.

Nevertheless its a quality razor and im positive it will be a fine shaver Enjoy!
