Thread: antler scales complete !!

    Nice job! I also made scales from antler in the past, but the result was not as nice as yours... did you put any finishing on them? Anything to preserve from water damage or to polish? I used shellack, that preserves from water, but gave a soft pink tone to the softer bone...

    i used a stain/poly combo on any area i had to , then a satin polyurethane over everything ... same thing with the brush handles ... the stain to knock out the bright white , then the poly satin finish ... to be honest i wouldnt think you would really need anything on the outer or area that wasnt cut , figure they have been wet many of times and those are many moons old ...lol..
    the pictures make them look better then they really are !!! they have many flaws that the camera or guy behind it could hide ..lol..

    My concern was mainly with rust. If the scales get accidentally wet, and they keep water inside, it might rust the blade... But it didn't happen
