Thanked: 10I wish I could have one from my great-grandfather as well, It looks very nice and will be a great shaver. But I think it can be improved though, If I was you I would send it to a proffesional for restoration and honing IMHO

Welcome to SRP. Cool razor and priceless being a family heirloom. That is the good news. There may be no bad news but you won't know until that black corrosion is honed at the bevel. If there is not deep pitting at the bevel all is well. If the corrosion has eaten pitting into the bevel it will fall apart as you hone it, resembling Swiss cheese. I hope that is not the case. If you have no experience honing razors I would suggest going to member services in the SRP classifieds and send it out. If you have the hones and the know how that isn't an issue.

I am with Jimmy on this one. You really want to gently clean away the black crud before doing anything else.
If the corrosion is deep and you start honing, you risk breaking part of the blade, and that would stink, considering that this blade belonged to your great great grandfather.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Until it is cleaned up more it will not be usable nor will it last long. You have active rust going there and unless taken care of, will render that beauty trash. Take it to a good member here at a meet up and let then clean it up for you or send off for restore. You will be better served in this way and have a lasting functional memory of you ancestor.
