Thanked: 14how to blunt a razor with a square tip
I have a FW Engels razor that I like very much. The only problem I have with this razor is that it's square point tends to grab me when I shave I have other razors with similar points that I do OK with but this particular razor seems to have my number. I would like to blunt the tip just slightly to make it a bit safer. Intuitively, it seems that I could just lightly drag the tip across my hone and it would work. I would like some input from those who know just what to do.
Thanks,
John

Use the side of a bevel-setter hone. Work from the tip, not the edge. Be gentle, be careful, don't take any more of the tip than necessary. I've done lots, mostly because I don't like shaving with squares.

Thanked: 2I just do the same on all my square points with a Diamond plate and clean up the edge corner with a stone. just a little radius is all I need. Those square points are a pool of blood just waiting to happen on my face.

I have a little 1x3 3000 grit ruby stone that is perfect for this. I don't have to gouge up one of my stones and the steel doesn't even begin to scratch up the ruby.
Those spike tips are mean. One time, in band camp, I shaved with a Gold Dollar razor.

Thanked: 1936When I am muting a square point, I do it while I am finishing. I will literally take a couple of light strokes on the side of the stone, then finish the razor on the stone. You really can't see that you have muted the tip & you can get it back if you want it later. No need to totally re-contour it on a rough stone...just mute it.

My usual technique is to run the tip under the windowsill a few strokes as one seems to bite too much.
Works like a champ!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

Buy round points, leave the spikes for me.
