Info on this razor
Sorry for the bad pictures. This is a Sheffield razor about 7/8"-1". I believe it reads hawkes or hawks and celebrated under the name, there was a name right next to Hawkes, but I do not remember what it was. Do you guys think that $42 is a good price. I know it needs new scales because the horn is rooting, and a good sanding to get rid of some rust and minor pitting.

It is a celebrated, but reads something along the lines of John or Joseph Hawke our Hawk.

John Shaw's Celebrated razor. 1850's to 1860's, for that stamp.
Edited to add.
Actually, I'm revising that date estimate a bit. The scales are gutta percha (rubber). I'd guess it's more like 1870. John Shaw died in 1879, but his sons carried on as John Shaw & Sons.Last edited by Voidmonster; 03-25-2013 at 10:12 PM.

so does $42 seem reasonable? i could had sworn they were horn as the had a hole in them that looked like a worm or termite chewed through.

Thanked: 177Its hard to say from the pictures but most of them clean up and hone up OK. If you want to shave with I'm sure it will be fine. I couldn't say if its worth more or less.

Seems a pretty fair price for such a large meat-chopper. I think you did well. Just my $0.02.
