Default N & R Dodge, Just picked this up for $25 guidance welcome.

I just picked this up from and add on Craigslist. It is an N &. R Dodge, the only information I could find on this razor co. Is from here Straight Razor Manufacturers and Dates of Operation.
The scales are made from leather and there is decrotive bras warsher, not sure if it was added later or if the scales are even original.

I would love to restore it but if it is as old as that site says it is I don't want to just jump in. Not too sure where to start really.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

According to Goins your N. & R. Dodge razor was made sometime between c1848 and1860. The firm was located at 68 West St, Sheffield, England. From what I can see of the blade, it could easily be restored. The scales look to be replacements judging by the unusual pinning techniques and hardware. If you are interested in keeping the scales they might be refreshed with the use of neatsfoot oil or some similar treatment and repinned to look a little more like the period from which they came. If you were to "restore" it you might consider using horn scales, which would make it more authentic. But, it's very nice razor for the price and still has a great future in front of it.

    Regards - Walt

Welcome to SRP. The scales do look to be replacements, as Walt said, from the unusual pinning used. OTOH, they are obviously so old that it is remotely possible that they are original. I would leave them on there one way or the other, since they date so close to the origin of the blade ...... I'm assuming. Really cool old razor !

Here is the SRP beginner's guide in the SRP library to get started. You can find someone to hone it in the SRP classifieds here, under member services.
