Stainless vs Carbon
Hello SRP members.
I've been trying to avoid falling prey to the adage "that poor men pay twice", so far - not so good.
Anyway, I'm in the market for a 7/8 razor. I've looked at some on the Shaveshop web site, the classifieds on various forums, Hart, customs, epay, etc., etc, etc. I'd like to narrow my search and confusion - if possible.
Any thoughts/experience on how stainless blade razors perform, hone, resale value, etc?
Thanks in advance to everyone who comments.

In my view stainless steel razors are great. I don't have many as most razors are made in carbon steel.
I find them just as easy to hone as carbon steel. The difficulty in honing really has to do with the grind. The more hollow the razor, the easier it is to hone.

I have found that stainless is no harder to hone than carbon and holds an edge just as well. If you get a good one like the Dovo I have.

The only two stainless blades I have are a couple wonderful Friodurs. IMO, they hone no different than any other but take a very sharp and stable edge. They shave great. BUT, all that said, I don't think this is particularly specific to stainless blades. There are other razors that I own that do the same and are not. I suspect that because they don't rust you will have a greater chance at a good resale value. In the end, stainless/carbon, your choice. The stainless/rust-resistant qualities can be nice since many of my other razors easily discolor or stain from water and soap while the Friodurs shine exceptionally all the time.

In my experience both are good. If stainless wasn't my guess is they wouldn't use it for razors anymore. I did a search for stainless vs carbon and came up with 4 pages if you want more info.

Thanked: 116I'll throw my half pence in!! I agree with it all, i've had 3 friodurs go through my hands, i kept one. Honing them isn't any more difficult, the shaves aren't any better, the edges (to me) don't seem to last longer or not. I treat them the same as I do carbon for honing, stropping and cleaning after usage. The one advantage in my opinion is that, due to their anti-rust characteristics, they will, under not-so-favorable conditions, outlast a carbon blade.

I have been chasing a decent stainless blade (at a good price) for a while. I finally have a nice Dovo Inox french point on the way, but I think the crappy plastic scales are going to have to go.
One time, in band camp, I shaved with a Gold Dollar razor.

Thanked: 3225I my experience using them there is no practical difference in performance. Stainless may have a bit of an edge over carbon as it is not as prone to rust.

I've never used a stainless razor so I can't comment on how well they shave. My experience with stainless knives is that they don't sharpen as easily, or take an edge as fine as their high carbon counterparts. In practice though if you keep the edge sharp you shouldn't notice any difference in shaving. You may have to touch up the edge more frequently though.
