Thanked: 0Antiques? Spike, Satinedge,Top Flight
All,
I have a friend that has three razors that are old and I was going to practice my honing technique. Then I realized they could be antiques or at least valuable. Any insight would be awesome. Thanks.
1. Opaque yellowish scales with two ducks etched in the bottom of the scales possibly in metal; one side of the shaft says, "Pearlduck" then under that two ducks etched into the metal in between the two words "dubl" and "duck", then under that, "Solingen Germany"; the other side of the shaft has the two ducks between the two words "dubl" and "duck" and under that the word "Satinedge".
2. Yellow plastic scales; one side of the shaft says, "Top Flight" with wings etched into the metal; the other side of the shaft is rusty and I can only read, "...cutlery co."
3. Yellow plastic scales (do I sense a trend?) that has the word, "Spike" etched into it; one side of the shaft has, "SPIKE" etched with a spike going through all the letters; the other side of the shaft says, "Union Cutlery Co. Olean, N.Y."
I appreciate any enlightenment on these anyone can give.
Thank you.

Thanked: 146You may want to check e-bay for pricing as we can not do evaluations here. Dubl ducks command pretty steep prices, and the top flight is made by Burrell cutlery, and American company that operated for just a couple of years ( I believe 1942-45 or somewhere in there.) The spike razors seem to be a little more common, so if any was going to be used for 'practice' it would be the spike if it was me. Put up some pics and I am sure you will get more opinions.

All 3 are great finds. Dubl ducks go for a good penny in the market, and the pearlduck is a favorite of many guys here. Top flights are excellent razors, I have one myself and love it. Union cutlery also made some nice, but very common razors as well.
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

Thanked: 0seacaptainchris, I apologize but the last time I saw my camera was "somewhere" in my girlfriend's car. I'll try to get pics up in a couple of days but my office mate will want his razors back soon when I tell him they are of high quality if not in so good a shape. My apologies to describe them with only a short paragraph. I assure you they are not much to look at with the rust and wear.
pixelfixed, thank you for the proper reminder. I must agree with you with your advice and it is heeded well. I will not learn honing on my friend's old razors.
Thanks all for your input on this. I may be making a straight razor convert in the office with the news of these razors.

Thanked: 13245BTW they are not plastic scales, they are Celluloid, the Brands are well known and even sought after, but Condition trumps everything.. Which is why pics are the most important request..
Worn out rusty razors are still worn out rusty razor regardless of brand name
