seeking expert advice
I recently bought a razor at auction that was described as a "Joseph Rodgers & Sons", it definitely says that on the box. However, the stamp on it only says made in Sheffield and the blade has Excelsior best hollow ground stamped on it. I'm doubtful it is a Joseph Rodgers, would someone with more experience that me be able to enlighten me please?

Razors are frequently mismatched with boxes. If it is not stamped Joseph Rodgers & Sons on the tang I doubt it is a Rodgers. However, it may still be a quality razor. If you can post photos of the razor with the blade open, and the tang visible, we can better judge whether it is in good enough shape to be worth honing and possibly further restoration if necessary.

Here is a photo, but i don't think it will help much, I'm hopeless at taking photos of razors.

Put "Excelsior " into our Advanced search function, above right, there is a lot of threads on this waiting for you.

Looks like it is good enough to send out to be honed, unless you are a honer yourself. I can't see the tang stamp clearly but I don't believe it is a J Rodgers & Sons.

Thanked: 1184I think it says Made in Sheffield .... Funny how that is right in the middle of the tang and no name. Doesn't even look like it is worn there.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.
