Thread: Taking care of my new kids/customs

Guys:
I am new here; I have gone razor nuts over the last two months. I have gotten thirty one razors, some good some bad, I have learned the hard way when you buy a nice shiny razor it does not say stainless steel it may well be. And I have little or no luck with getting them sharp. However, I have been able to get two new custom razors, one from Phil Dobson and a Robert Williams’s purist. I have been stroping for twenty on my homemade cotton jeans strop after I shave and coat with light mineral oil, and wiped down with gun cloth with silicon.
Is this a good way to keep the kids happy? Thanks for any feed back.

Toad. You need a strop worthy of the Purist. PM Robert and ask what he recommends. Don't tie up a 30k boat with a 10 cent rope! Go to the "stroptober" thread and read up on stropping. Lots of info there.
If you understrop, the fine edge shall deteriorate. If you strop correctly, it shall get better! JMO

Yea, I was pretty amazed that someone has custom razors but no decent strop to help maintain them or the other nearly thirty razors. I would definitely look at the 'stroptober' thread. You could also check out the "Library" section of the forum and specifically this section there Razor stropping - Straight Razor Place Wiki.

Welcome to the SRP forum toadie. A Robert Williams and a Phillip Dobson straight razor deserve the best strop you can afford to buy. There may be some real winners in the rest of your razor stash as well. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks, for the help, I have many good pieces of leather, I make holsters on the side, and have used them to make my own stropes, plus I own a Ill. leather and fiber one. I have diamond dust and green and red and white paste and blasa wood. I am trying to live up the two customs they are in a league of their own. I have watched many videos and still their many ways to reach Rome.

Thats good! It sounds like you have a regular stropping arsenal there! I just did not see how 20 on denim was good enough, but hey! If it works, it works! Indeed, guys strop with most anything (And make videos of most anything as well!).
The old leather strop has been around since the olden days. Lots of modern choices, I suppose.

Bob sorry to miss lead you, I own more then 5 strops one balsa, one linen, and 3 leather one plain one with diamond dust, and one with oxide. Made all 3 out of prime skrit 8/9. Of course I have cut them up trying to relearn to this. I have been blessed to be have read this forum and you tube it alot. Plus my mother was a hairdresser as well my father who was also
a barber, he taught me how to shave and handle a razor. Learning to shave with the wreck shavetts over 45years ago, it hurt often and alot, true I am not the man I once was. The old straight I had was not as good as the wreck changable blades. I have lost my way and I am reaching to come back to the center, being sixty and not cutting my face off is a good thing. My mom made sure I got a lot of the old stuff from the shop. You are smart to see through me. Thanks for the help.

Aw well, the way your original post was written it came across as you having only one homemade denim strop, my mistake. If you are only talking a post shave routine and not the use of a strop in general maintenance then if that is working for you that is all that matters. My post shave routine to includes none of what you do and I maintain about the same number of razors. There is no real standard post shave routine from what I can tell and most seem to evolve what works best for them in their particular environment. Only you know if what you are doing is sufficient to keep the kids happy, that is assuming you mean rust free between uses.

Yeah, Toadie! Since you were new we did not know! We were about to take up a collection for you a new strop!

Congrats on the collection-I'd love one of those Purists myself!
