Default Rich Gentlemen and Seven Day Sets?

This has always confused me - perhaps it's my background combined with a lack of understanding of how these things used to work, but...

I've always been under the (perhaps incorrect) impression that seven day razor sets were typically the domain of rich gentlemen from times long past. I don't understand why a rich gentleman, given that he's rich, would require razors at all. Why wouldn't he avoid the time and trouble and just pay a barber for a daily shave? Am I confusing mere wealth with "enormously rich"; or wealth with idleness? Or does this refer to a time before barbers were invented?

A trivial question, I know, but if anyone can enlighten me I'd appreciate it.

    James.

I think back in the really old days having a seven day set with Ivory Scales was the thing to have, kind of like owning a Rolex Watch or driving an upscale BMW now. Most really rich people did have a butler or some servant who probably did shave him at home. It was more the upper middleclass people who went to a barber on a regular basis for a shave. A really rich person wouldn't mingle with the riff-raff in a commercial establishment you know.

Yes, that makes sense. I forgot about the riff-raff

I think it's more fun to have 7 different razors from different manufacturers. Variety's the spice of life

Maybe they also have a seven day set so that they can go a whole week without needing to strop their razor ? Then every week someone (servant, blacksmith?) would come and sharpen/strop all seven for them, and they could go another week without worries.

And even more fun to have 7+ different razors and a seven day set or two....just ask Lynn (or others)! This is some years down the road for me - see the thread about what your wife doesn't get....

I find that car restoration is the best possible threat. It gets into every weekend and tens of thousands.

Buddy you are soooo right, I have this in my garage and will most likely be buried in it! It was very fun to build but it is in my way now
