Thread: 2 Vintage Thiers-Issard "Le Petit Francais" - 69 MEDAILLE ARG

I recently acquired the the below swords on Ebay. I paid $40 and some change for both. I wanted to find out little bit about them - for instance, when were they manufactured? From the pictures can someone please shed some light on this particular model, style, restorability, worth?

I was planning on getting them professionally restored as I am still a newbie to the wonderful world of straight edge shaving.

WOW! That's a great price! I really have to watch eBay as i have wanted one of those for some time!!

I am not one of those guys who knows much but I do know being I have a thing for 4/8's that they are just that - 4/8's. And from what i understand they were made in France back in the day when the company was still using magic steel lol!!

Honestly - all I know is that from what I have read is that they are supposed to be great shavers. Let me know if you feel otherwise and I'll be happy to relieve you of them .

Restorabtion is doable, but the one to the right on the top-left picture is in a very bad shape. See that curve to the edge, how the blade is narrower in the middle? That is what we call a 'frown' and is a result of excessive incorrect honing. Fixing it requires heavy correction - basically you cannot ad the steel that was removed, so you have to keep removing from the areas that got less abrasion until you make that excessive honing uniform throughout the blade.

As pointed out we have a policy against valuations but I would absolutely not have paid that money for these.

Isn't that something lol - I didn't see the frown - at all. Good looking out . My post is a good example of irrational exuberance toward an item of lust lol!! I got to stop posting when I get excited LOL!

Well, I think I've been at this a bit longer than you and probably fixed few more than you have and learned my lesson

Excitement is not a bad thing though, I too get excited over razors, but nowadays they're more like this guy

I honestly want to stop buying blades lol... I have blades that I have shaved with a day or two and put away lol. When I started all I wanted was one blade and one stone...

That said! Were I to own that Lewis - I would be hard pressed to reach for anything else !
