Thanked: 0Etching a Blade?
I know there have been discussions about this, but I haven't been able to find an answer searching through the archives.
Does anyone know of a reputable place that laser etches straight razors (and does a gorgeous job)?
Grace and peace,
`tim

You can try this place- I'm going to try them myself tomorrow. It could be a risk so I suggest that you ask if they have any experience with straights. I guess they could always lie to get business but might I also suggest a local jewelry store? Don't really have the best answer until I try it myself!
Regards,
Tony

I got a knife etched or engraved once at 'things remembered' which is a corporate location located in many malls accross America. They did a fine job on the knife, but the blade had a lot of 'meat' on it.... They use some diamond bit engraving machine, the etching didn't mess with the temper of the steel which is imperative. I would say they would be able to do a wedge or 1/4 hollow but full hollows are out of the question. They also will not engrave anything valued over $300.... Just FYI!

Ok so I just spoke to the gentleman at the above store. They can engrave whatever you would like on to the blade or the scales depending on the quality of the picture that you send them, which needs to be scanned into a computer so it has to be high quality, or they could do initials as well. He does NOT recommend any kind of engraving on to carbon steel as the way he described it to me it changes the molecular structure of the metal which will in affect throw off the temper of the blade. It is roughly 20 dollars per order and an order can be 1 or 21 it doesn't make a difference, and then the charges go up depending on what is being engraved on the razor. He was a nice enough guy and will answer any questions that you have for him I think I will send a cheap razor out to him just to see how the work comes out before I go large.

Thanked: 105I do lazer engraving. After reading the information in the above link, I would ask what type of lazer they are using? If it is a co2 then they are using a product such as cermak or lazer dark to etch onto base metals, it does not do well on carbon steel. You can use a diamond rotary engraver on a full hollow but you got to know how to do it or you will break the razor.
Co2 lazers are more for engraving on organic material.
Just a little FYI with respect.

Tim/oldblades does fantastic work, he is the one you should contact. I have seen his work, I have had him do stuff for me and I can not recommend him enough.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain
