if by back piece you mean something on the inside...
if by back piece you mean something on the inside of the scale, I say leave it open. I think seeing the blade through the open portions will look better.

I've done my first couple restores with nothing...
I've done my first couple restores with nothing but hand tools, but I know what you mean. The more I look at work like this and our pros in the resto section, the more I feel this power tool...
