Holiday scales in progress
Thought ya'll might like to see some work in progress. These are being made for a good friend of mine. The blade for these scales will be a W&B 5/8 barbers' notch.
the first pic is the line drawing.
The pattern is printed out to size and glued to a piece of 26ga. nickle.
Holes are then drilled in the areas to be cut away.
The second pic shows my bench pin, jeweller's sawframe, and some blades.
The background areas are then cut away.
The top plate is then soldered to a backing plate made from 20ga. nickle.
The excess metal and interior background are cut away at this point.
This scale is now ready for the buffing wheel. Then green enamel will be added for the leaves, and red enamel for the berries.
I decided to do open work on these scales to help with balance issues. We'll see how well that works out.

Damn I wish I could be that skilled! Are you a jeweller by any chance?

I hate you shutterbug, when I think of the fact that you blatantly display work that inadvertently brings to light my lack of skill. Well my only response is, how dare you sir, how dare you.

No, I'm not a jeweller. I'm actually a photographer by trade. I've been doing silversmithing for a bit over 10 years. I have normally in the past just done stuff for friends and family, with some commission work when times get lean.
Like most hobbiest's, most of what I make goes right back into tools and material for the shop.
However, some of my friends are telling me that I need to go and sit for my bench jeweller's exam.
