if by back piece you mean something on the inside of the scale, I say leave it open. I think seeing the blade through the open portions will look better.

For this one I agree. My thought was following his first set of scales and the black enameling he did in the background. I was thinking something along the lines of a simple celtic knot over a burl perhaps.

The scales are already have the backing plate on them.

I'm leaving the areas between the leaves and berries open to try and help compensate for the weight issues with using a smaller blade. That, and I thought it would be sexy to see a Wade&Buthcer hiding in a holly bush.

I posted a pic from this morning, it's the last post on the previous page.

    cheers!

    Default almost done

I got the scales finished today. I couldn't wait, so I rough seated the blade into the piviot to check the relative balance. Got fairly close
The heft and roll of the blade and scales seems very promising as well.
I'll finish cleaning up the blade later this afternoon, and hopefully will have the whole thing done by later today or tomorrow.

    cheers,

    Quite remarkable.

You have insipred me. I have a pair of celtic knotwork style wings that I designed and had tattooed onto my back a few years ago. the shape should fit quite well in a pair of scales. I have everything except for the bench pin to make them up. I am thinking of doing it in hammered copper and placing it on some ebony.

Thank you for the inspiration and tips on how to proceed.

    That would be too cool!
You might want to look at Rio Grande for the bench pin set up.
That's where I get a ton of my stuff.
