Mike, in your experience, what is the safest way to draw out a finished billet, especially where it concernes upsetting? Orange heat or closer to welding heat?

I used borax. It did a good job. :)
The benefit of borax is that you can re-apply when the steel is hot. I presume that for kerosene it has to be cold? -
