No, they are pretty much flat and good to go right out of the box.
I did lap mine initially, just to get to fresh grit and all, but it really didn't take much at all.

As above, imho it does away with any need for paste or spray.
It is a very fine and consistent finisher, capable of producing stellar results pretty darn fast.

I tend to use a 10K Chosera before...
