Thanked: 1081Gokumyo 20k hone
Hi chaps. I am thinking of buying a gokumyo 20k hone as Ive read great reviews for this finisher.
I am currently finishing with a 10k naniwa superstone then 10-15 laps on cro ox with great results but Im sure theres room for improvement. For those with a gokumyo does it do away with the need of cro ox? And is the jump from a 10k too much?
Thanks for any help.

They are great finishers. Whether the $ you'll have to shell out are going to be cost effective for improvement you'd get over the "great results" you've described remains to be seen. I like the results I get and I don't use chrom-ox.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 2591I use 10k SS before Gokumyo 20k and get superb results. I do not need pastes after, but I believe this is a matter of experience with honing and with the hones.

As above, imho it does away with any need for paste or spray.
It is a very fine and consistent finisher, capable of producing stellar results pretty darn fast.
I tend to use a 10K Chosera before going to the Suehiro, and it works perfectly. For me.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Thanked: 1081Thanks for your replys guys. I know that you cant compare to a natural but I like the thought of a consistant hone that is easy to use and can get a great finish.

+1 on the Suehiro Gokumyo 20k. I use the Shapton Gs series hones up to 16k, and finish on the 20k. It's an excellent hone.
BTW, No Pastes or Sprays needed after, and you should be fine coming off the 10k.Last edited by zib; 01-23-2014 at 04:13 PM.

Same thing again. Shapton GS to the 8k (used to go to 16k) and then to the G20. No paste or spray, just a clean strop.

I must get myself one of those Suehiro Gokumyo 20k, I'm not sure where other than Japan how to get hold of one, and I would not want to pay import duty on that stone for sure.
