As long as you clean the sponge and leave it out to dry, I don't see the hazard. The sponges I get from the grocery store is mildew resistant. Brushes are subjected to the same treatment

The sponges you buy in the grocery store are supposed to be mildew resistant. I replace one maybe once a month. Seems like it would smell if it mildewed.

I never used the kind of "dog dish" you are talking about. What you're describing might do a better job. What I used was as hard as the rubber in a plunger and let me tell you it does one lousy job.
