I have a few turn of the century horn scales that were pinned with no washers. Some of the French ones look like flat polished plastic.
After about the 1880's when the grinding machine was patented...

IMO. The lightening of the blade was secondary to the extra stiffness imparted to the edge.

Torrey and Wade and Butcher and a couple Swedish houses used that grind also. I like the shave from them. Stiff and strong edge in a narrow blade.
