I teach the 4-8 Norton and shaved off them, or the 3-6 setup. A jump of 5k is just too much at the lower end.
1K 4K 8K and a nice finisher above that 6+or 8K is a winner. A natural hone above 8K... -

Black or translucent Arkansas' are good but...
Black or translucent Arkansas' are good but horribly slow stones for finishing. They do a really good job though.
Lather, honing oil, or glycerin and water to hone on them.
