I beg to differ. I have poured out muddy, stinky water from the cup every time I have soaked a new knot in Oxyclean.

Clean it good. Give it a go. I dig my old knots. They work just fine! ;)

I use Oxyclean, a few tablespoons in a coffee cup with water up a bit over the handle/hair transition, bristles down. Let it fizzle for a while.
As you pour out the cup, look at what comes out....
