The Puma name was begun in the early 20's. About the time when Germans were buying Sheffield steel. I absolutely think the numbering thing was post-WWII.

They have the stamp on the backside tang. Some...
They have the stamp on the backside tang. Some have Kayser Ellison Silver Steel on the front side. Like old Henckels, lots of models.
Mine has nothing on the front tang. A #6.
