Thread: Which Puma

I need another razor to go along with my Filly, I am leaning toward a Puma. Which one 38, 89, 91 and I see a lot of them from Japan Hard to tell if they are nice or not. I would rather not get one in the mail w/all kinds of rust that has been sanded off.

My biggest advice about looking for razors is don’t be in a rush. Look, watch and wait. I have gotten many fantastic deals simply by doing just that.
There are a few sellers on eBay that are from Japan that typically have very nice razors, then watch and wait. PM me if you want links to the two that I have had great dealings with.

I recently bought 4 that were shipped from Japan. They are NOS. I have on a No. 9 5/8 since around 79’ or 80’. It’s my best Shaver. The new ones are two 89s, a 90, and a Puma Gold. I had to spend some time getting them really shave ready but I think I’ve gotten them all in shape. I’m going to test Shave one tomorrow that arrived today. It seems to me that it takes a little more effort or a few extra strokes to get a Puma there but once you get there it holds an edge a very long time and shaves silky smooth.

If you can find one, the pre-WWII ones are best..AND much larger.

Yes. I think what Puma had was the best quality control. Back in those days one of the 26 tests a Puma Razor had to pass was every mm of the blade had to cut a single hair. They just did not ship anything that wasn’t perfect.

All vintage Pumas were well made. New ones are junk & the Dovo made ones are meh.
Buying a Puma is no different to buying any other razor. Make sure the pics are good to start with.

As to the '1938' Pumas. IMO, they are post-war from the 50's-70's?
No resemblance to the pre-war one I posted above.

I feel the reputation pre-war was what got the name going after the war.
Just a good German razor. A recognizable name which survived the war.
Much like DublDuck, Hess, and Cmon. For all anyone knows, the post-war ones all came from the same maker. (Dovo?)
