Your right the HT is an unknown. Currently, the plan is to use a RWL34 steel on this. The RWL34 is a powdered metallurgy steel which, as far as I know, has no residual stresses to relieve during HT....

Max, good call on the thickness. This one was just a mock-up out of something I had laying around in the workshop. This was never going to be a real shaver, I just wanted to try grinding the smile...

Mocked this up on the week end out of a bit of 5mm mild steel. Still very rough but gives you the idea. The lower part under the cut out still feels very solid.

I hear you there mate, yikes. I can't even find someone to sell me any D2 or O1 in 6mm (1/4 ") thickness. Kind of frustrating.

Thanks for the feedback Bruno. You might be right about both points, the HT is an unknown for sure. The curl may be a bit close for someone with thicker fingers also. Again, feedback is appreciated....

I doubt that I will be hailed the next great thing :) There is nothing new under the sun unfortunately. I have seen something similar before. Alex Jacques has done most of the things that I have...

The cut out was the ....."maybe". Would love to try it but I might be biting off more than I can chew.
