The term silver steel definitely began with the Stodart/Faraday experiments, but from pretty much the beginning people were advertising things like 'improved silver steel' and 'perfected silver...

Also, the lead bath thing goes back to Stodart (and I think he got it from somewhere).

When he was using it, like Mike Blue says, it was for precise temperature control.

I gotta admit to being itchy to get one of my very early Stenton razors stamped 'Silver Steel' out to ScienceGuy for XRAY BOMBARDMENT.

That bit with the palladium was me being slangy. It wasn't merely prohibitively expensive, they were simply not able to get enough of the stuff under any circumstances to do large scale...

At the very, very beginning, it absolutely did contain a tiny quantity of silver. At least in the experiments that lead to it being a marketing term.
