    Thanks for the comments. I waterproofed the leather by rubbing lanolin into them, transfers a little to the steel which protects it also.

    I have done other projects in leather and sanding it is risky. The original Spike scales weren't rounded so I figured I would keep in line with the original scales.

    Actually if it gets some water splashed on it, the leather will harden up even more and it will add interesting stains and coloration to the scales.
