You probably should invest in sending your razor...
You probably should invest in sending your razor for honing, then learn how to shave and maintain the edge on the strop then honing.
That strop will work fine! any linen or cotton on the other side? -

5/8 is a great size for beginners, spike point ,...
5/8 is a great size for beginners, spike point , round point, french point etc is a preference like you said, because of the almost perfect 90degree
point they tend to bite more then a round point... -

Looks like a spike point 5/8 full hollow. Im assuming it is a Manganese steel Wester bros Solingen Germany.
Definately a good quality razor for sure!
